DEFINITLY NOT AN OLYMPIC SPORT

Tensions between the U.S. and China are still high, & now hackers in both countries may be turning a diplomatic spar into a cyber battle -- with everyday users the likely victims.

Several U.S. Web sites have already been targeted, & American hackers claim to have penetrated Chinese sites, with further incursions reportedly being urged within the "hacker community."

In retaliation, Chinese hackers are promising to launch a counter-offensive, supposedly slated to begin May 1.

The purported cyber attack might likely reach a peak on May 4, a Chinese holiday (commemorating a 1919 student demonstration in Beijing's Tianamen Square), & if carried out could possibly include the release of computer viruses as well.

Threats of this nature have been reported in the past without being carried out, but Web vigilance is never a bad idea, & the best protection for Internet users is to always practice safe computing:

- Make sure your Web site is secure and behind a firewall.

- Make sure your anti-virus program has the latest virus definitions (check out you're A-V's home page to be sure).

- Don't open e-mail attachments from unknown sources

. - Only open attachments from known sources after your anti-virus program has scanned them.

- Don't download or accept any programs from unknown or questionable sources

. - If you use a Microsoft product for your e-mail, make sure you've installed the latest service packs for Outlook 2000 & Office 2000, which will help protect you from some viruses, like the recent "BadTrans" worm. Get the Microsoft updates at: http://officeupdate.microsoft.com
